This is a stick-shaped hojicha made from carefully selected, rare tea stems from Makinohara and Kanaya in Shizuoka Prefecture, which have been gently roasted. Roasted to a light golden hue that still faintly reveals the green color of the tea leaves, it is characterized by a fragrant flavor and a crisp, refreshing finish. We are proud to present this exceptional stick-style hojicha. We also recommend brewing this tea cold, allowing you to enjoy the unique sweetness and refreshing, smooth flavor characteristic of stick-style hojicha.
A mellow sweetness that comes from the stems
When people hear the term “hojicha,” most probably think of the aromatic tea made from roasted tea leaves. However, “Bō Hojicha” uses not the leaves, but the stems—a part known as “kukicha” (stem tea).
The stems contain a different kind of sweetness and umami than the leaves. Roasting these stems until they become fragrant creates the gentle flavor unique to Bō Hōjicha. While retaining the distinctive roasted aroma of hōjicha, it has a lighter, smoother mouthfeel, with a subtle sweetness lingering on the palate.
Another characteristic of this tea, which is made from the stems, is its mild caffeine content. It’s gentle on the stomach, so you can enjoy it with peace of mind in the evening, as well as with children and the elderly. It pairs well with any meal and tastes delicious whether served hot or cold—its versatility is another appealing feature.
Amid the hustle and bustle of the day, there are moments when the tension in your shoulders suddenly melts away. Bō Hōjicha is a tea that gently accompanies you during those casual moments.
Brewing Guidelines:
Enjoy the full aroma with boiling water (95°C or higher). When brewed cold, its crisp, clean sweetness really stands out.
Here are some general guidelines for making cold brew tea. Use about 1 liter of water for every 10 grams of tea leaves. Let it steep for about 1 to 3 hours. Even if you let it sit for about 6 hours, it will still be delicious with minimal astringency or bitterness. Please give it a try.
